Emily Sweeney
lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/ USA, where she creates performance installations, choreographed and improvised works with artists of various media. She has co-directed Perpetual Movement and Sound with sound and visual artist William Bilwa Costa since 2006. As frequent collaborators, Emily and Bilwa have presented improvised and choreographed works around Philadelphia and New York as part of the Soundfield Festival, CEC New Edge Mix and New York Dance Exchange, paraphrase/NEXUS, Philly Fringe, and Group Motion's Spiel Uhr series. In 2009, they participated in PRISMA Forum-Mexico, collaoborating with many trans-media artists as a part of the laboratory "Who's Afraid of the In-Between?" In 2008, with support from the Argosy Foundation and Soundfield, Emily and Bilwa initiated international collaborations with artists from Europe, including sound artists Florian Tuerke and Werner Moebius and movement artist Mariella Greil. Emily also dances with the Emergent Improvisation Ensemble and for independent choreographer Brigitta Herrmann. Emily’s artistic style relies upon the emphasis and abstraction of the body through the isolation of its most basic elements—breath, skin sensation, muscle contraction. She seeks to engage observers through precise, expressive, and minimal movements, and frequently makes use of undecorated gesture and repetition. Collaboration with other dancers and musicians and use of improvisation are central to her practice. Emily holds a B.A. in Dance and Literature from Bennington College, Vermont/ USA, where she was the recipient of the Brockway Faculty and Bennington Scholarships to study technique and choreography with Dana Reitz, Eva Karczag, Terry Creach, Susan Sgorbati, Susan Rethorst, and Lisa Kraus; writing with Edward Hoagland and Marguerite Feitlowitz.

William Bilwa Costa is a sound and visual artist who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania/ USA. He has co-directed Perpetual Movement and Sound with movement artist Emily Sweeney since 2006. As frequent collaborators, Bilwa and Emily have presented improvised and choreographed works around Philadelphia and New York as part of the Soundfield Festival, CEC New Edge Mix and New York Dance Exchange, paraphrase/NEXUS, Philly Fringe, and Group Motion's Spiel Uhr series. In 2009, they participated in PRISMA Forum-Mexico, collaoborating with many trans-media artists as a part of the laboratory "Who's Afraid of the In-Between?" In 2008, with support from the Argosy Foundation and Soundfield, Bilwa and Emily initiated international collaborations with artists from Europe, including sound artists Florian Tuerke and Werner Moebius and movement artist Mariella Greil. In 2009, Bilwa received a Meet the Composer grant for a sound and video collaboration with John J. H. Phillips. Collaboration with other musicians and dancers and use of improvisation are central to Bilwa’s practice, and he actively cultivates opportunities for artists to work together on new interdisciplinary explorations. His electronic music and sound art often involve the abstraction of live-feed source material such as dancers’ breath and body sounds, acoustic musicians, and audio frequency feedback—sonic relics through which he seeks to pull elements of specific spaces, times, and interactions into his work. He is interested in sensory perception, subjectivity, and the ways in which humans filter and interpret our experiences. In 2008/09, he was special projects director at NEXUS/foundation for today's art, where he curated and produced paraphrase/NEXUS, a monthly performance series in which artists of various disciplines respond to the gallery’s exhibitions. He also curated and engineered NEXUSradio, a low powered AM radio station that allowed artists to explore radio as a medium.
